RBT Exam Study Guide 2026 (3rd Edition Test Content Outline)

If you are studying for the RBT exam right now, there is a decent chance you are using materials that were written for a version of the exam that no longer exists.

That is not an exaggeration. On January 1, 2026, the BACB replaced the RBT Task List (2nd ed.) with the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.). The domains were renamed, the task count grew from 37 to 43, and several skills that never appeared on the old exam are now fair game. Most of the free study guides, flashcard decks, and YouTube playlists floating around were built before that change and have not been rewritten.

This guide is the current picture. It covers how the exam is structured, what every domain actually tests, how many questions each domain contributes, where candidates reliably lose points, and how to build a study plan that spends your time in proportion to what is being scored.

I have written it the way I would explain it to a technician sitting across from me the week before their test date: what matters, what does not, and what the question is really asking when it looks like two answers are both correct.

What changed for the 2026 exam

The short version, so you can get oriented before the detail:

  • The document formerly called the Task List is now the Test Content Outline (TCO).
  • Four of the six domains were renamed. Measurement became Data Collection and Graphing. Assessment became Behavior Assessment. Skill Acquisition became Behavior Acquisition. Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice became Ethics.
  • The outline grew from 37 tasks to 43 tasks.
  • New content was added, including calculating and summarizing data, identifying trends in graphed data, implementing punishment procedures, describing the secondary effects of extinction and punishment, and engaging in ongoing cultural humility and responsiveness.
  • Certification maintenance also changed, moving to a two-year cycle with professional development requirements in place of the annual competency assessment.

The exam format itself did not change. Same length, same question count, same time limit.

Two details are worth sitting with.

Ten of your questions do not count. The BACB embeds unscored pilot items to test future questions. You cannot tell which ones they are. This matters psychologically more than strategically: if you hit a question that feels bizarre or unlike anything you studied, there is a real chance it is a pilot item. Flag it, answer it, move on. Do not let it rattle the next ten questions.

The passing score is scaled, not a percentage. The BACB converts your raw score to a scaled score and sets the standard using a modified Angoff process, which accounts for the fact that some exam forms are slightly harder than others. There is no published number of correct answers that guarantees a pass. The practical implication for studying is simple: aim for 80% or better on quality practice material and stop trying to reverse-engineer the exact cutoff. At 90 minutes for 85 questions, you have a little over a minute per item. That is generous for a definition question and tight for a four-sentence scenario. Pace matters, and I will come back to it.

The domain breakdown: where the questions actually come from

This is the most useful table in this guide. The 3rd Edition TCO specifies exactly how the 75 scored questions are distributed.

Behavior Acquisition and Behavior Reduction together are 44% of your exam. Nearly half the test comes from two domains. If you are short on time, that is where the time goes in preparing for the RBT certification exam.

Ethics is 15%, which is more than most people expect. Eleven scored questions is more than Behavior Assessment. Candidates routinely treat ethics as the section they will “just answer with common sense” and then lose four or five questions to scenarios where two options both sound professional. Ethics is also the domain with the most tasks (ten), which means the questions spread wide rather than deep.

Behavior Assessment is only 8 questions across 3 tasks. It is dense content with a small footprint. Learn the preference assessment types cold, understand your role in functional assessment, and do not over-invest here.

A useful sanity check: divide your available study hours by the percentages above. If you have 30 hours, that is roughly 7.5 hours on Behavior Acquisition, 5.5 on Behavior Reduction, 5 on Data Collection and Graphing, 4.5 on Ethics, 4 on Documentation and Reporting, and 3.5 on Behavior Assessment. Almost nobody studies in these proportions, which is exactly why the weighting is worth knowing.

Now let us go domain by domain.

Domain A: Data Collection and Graphing (13 questions, 17%)

This domain replaced what used to be called Measurement, and it grew. The old version was mostly “know your measurement systems.” The new version adds computation and interpretation.

What the eight tasks cover, in plain English:

  1. Running continuous measurement procedures such as frequency, duration, latency, and interresponse time.
  2. Running discontinuous procedures: partial interval, whole interval, and momentary time sampling.
  3. Recording permanent products.
  4. Entering data and updating graphs.
  5. Describing behavior and the environment in observable, measurable terms.
  6. Calculating and summarizing data in different ways, including rate, mean duration, and percentage.
  7. Identifying trends in graphed data.
  8. Describing the risks that come with unreliable data collection and poor procedural fidelity.

Tasks 6, 7, and 8 are the ones that older study guides do not prepare you for. If your materials never asked you to compute a rate or look at a graph and say whether the trend was increasing, decreasing, or flat, those materials predate this exam.

The distinctions that decide these 13 questions

Continuous versus discontinuous. Continuous measurement captures every instance of the behavior. Discontinuous samples it. Continuous is more accurate, discontinuous is more practical when you are running a session and cannot watch one behavior every second. Full treatment in continuous vs discontinuous measurement.

Over- and underestimation. Partial interval scores the interval if the behavior happened at any point, so it tends to overestimate. Whole interval requires the behavior throughout, so it tends to underestimate. Momentary time sampling checks only at the end of the interval and can go either direction. This fact appears on essentially every exam form in some phrasing, and it is covered in depth in partial vs whole interval vs momentary time sampling.

The four timers. Duration times the behavior itself. Latency times from the instruction or antecedent to the start of the behavior. Interresponse time measures from the end of one response to the start of the next. Rate is a count with time attached. Candidates who mix these up are usually mixing up what event starts the stopwatch, which is the only thing you actually need to memorize. See duration, latency, and IRT compared.

How it looks on the exam

Your supervisor wants to know how long it takes a client to begin putting toys away after the instruction is given. Which measurement procedure should you use?

A. Duration B. Latency C. Interresponse time D. Momentary time sampling

The answer is B. The clock starts at the instruction and stops when the behavior begins, which is latency by definition. Duration is tempting because the question contains the phrase “how long,” and that is precisely the distractor. Duration would answer “how long did cleaning up take,” not “how long before cleaning up started.”

That is the shape of most Domain A questions. The correct answer is usually determined by one clause in the stem, and there is always one option that matches the surface wording rather than the procedure.

Domain B: Behavior Assessment (8 questions, 11%)

Only three tasks live here, but they carry a lot of content.

What the three tasks cover:

  1. Conducting preference assessments, including multiple stimulus, paired stimulus, and free operant formats.
  2. Participating in assessments of skill strengths and deficits, such as curriculum-based, developmental, and social skills assessments.
  3. Participating in components of functional assessment procedures, including descriptive assessment and functional analysis.

Notice the verb in tasks 2 and 3: participate. You assist. You do not design the assessment, interpret the results for the family, or decide what the behavior’s function is. That distinction shows up in both this domain and Ethics, and it is worth internalizing now because the exam tests it repeatedly. I unpack it in what RBTs can and cannot do during assessment.

The preference assessment formats, condensed

The two multiple stimulus formats are the ones that trip people up, mostly because the names are nearly identical. The deciding word is replacement: with replacement, the chosen item goes back in the array and a learner can choose it repeatedly; without replacement, it comes out, so you get a full ranking. Functional assessment, and what you are actually doing

Functional assessment comes in three flavors, and the exam wants you to tell them apart:

  • Indirect assessment gathers information without observing the behavior: interviews, rating scales, record reviews.
  • Descriptive assessment observes the behavior in the natural environment, which is where ABC data collection lives.
  • Functional analysis manipulates conditions systematically to test hypotheses about function. A behavior analyst designs and oversees it. You may help run conditions under direct supervision.

If a question asks who determines the function of a behavior, the answer is never the RBT acting alone. More on the three approaches in indirect vs descriptive assessment vs functional analysis.

Domain C: Behavior Acquisition (19 questions, 25%)

The largest domain on the exam, and the one worth the most study time. Eleven tasks covering reinforcement, teaching formats, prompting, generalization, and shaping.

What the eleven tasks cover:

  1. Implementing positive and negative reinforcement contingently and immediately, according to schedules, and across dimensions like magnitude, intensity, and variety.
  2. Establishing and using conditioned reinforcers.
  3. Discrete-trial teaching.
  4. Naturalistic teaching, including incidental teaching and natural environment training.
  5. Task analyzed chaining: forward, backward, and total task.
  6. Discrimination training.
  7. Stimulus and response prompts with appropriate fading, including errorless learning, least-to-most, stimulus fading, and time delay.
  8. Generalization procedures across settings, people, and stimuli.
  9. Distinguishing maintenance procedures from acquisition procedures.
  10. Shaping.
  11. Token economies.

Task 1 deserves a note. The phrase “along a continuum of dimensions” is new language, and it points at something the old task list glossed over: reinforcement is not binary. How much you deliver, how intense it is, and how much you vary it all affect whether it works. Expect at least one question where every option describes delivering reinforcement and the correct answer is the one that gets the dimension right.

The concept pairs that decide this domain

Positive versus negative reinforcement. Positive adds, negative removes, and both increase future behavior. The word negative does not mean bad and does not mean punishment. This single confusion probably costs more points than any other aspect of the RBT practice exam. Worked examples in positive vs negative reinforcement.

Reinforcement schedules. Fixed and variable, ratio and interval. Ratio schedules count responses. Interval schedules involve time. Fixed means predictable, variable means averaged. Continuous reinforcement builds a new skill fastest; intermittent reinforcement makes it durable. See schedules of reinforcement explained.

The three chaining procedures. Forward chaining teaches step one first. Backward chaining teaches the last step first, so the learner always finishes the chain and contacts the natural reinforcer. Total task runs every step every session with prompting as needed. Detailed in forward vs backward vs total task chaining.

Prompt types and fading directions. Least-to-most starts with the smallest prompt and adds help only when needed, which preserves independence but permits errors. Most-to-least starts with the prompt you know will work and thins it out, which prevents errors but risks prompt dependency. Time delay inserts a pause between the instruction and the prompt. DTT versus naturalistic teaching. Discrete trial teaching is massed, adult-led, and produces fast acquisition with a known generalization weakness. Naturalistic teaching is learner-led, embedded in play or routines, uses reinforcers related to the activity, and generalizes better while acquiring more slowly. How it looks on the exam

You are teaching a learner to wash their hands using a nine-step task analysis.Your supervisor’s plan says the learner should complete the final step independently before earlier steps are taught.Which procedure are you implementing?

A. Total task chaining B. Forward chaining C. Backward chaining D. Shaping

The answer is C. The tell is “final step first.” Shaping is the distractor for anyone who read “gradually building a skill” into the stem, but shaping reinforces successive approximations of a single behavior rather than teaching linked steps in a sequence.

Domain C questions are usually procedural rather than definitional. They describe something you are doing and ask what it is called, or they describe a goal and ask what you should do next. Memorizing definitions gets you partway. Recognizing procedures in narrative form gets you the rest.

Domain D: Behavior Reduction (14 questions, 19%)

Seven tasks, and two of them are new in the 3rd Edition.

What the seven tasks cover:

  1. Identifying common functions of behavior.
  2. Antecedent interventions, including noncontingent reinforcement, high-probability request sequences, and demand fading.
  3. Differential reinforcement procedures: DRO, DRA, DRI, DRL, and functional communication training.
  4. Extinction procedures.
  5. Positive and negative punishment procedures, including time-out.
  6. Describing the secondary effects of extinction (extinction burst, response variation, resurgence, emotional responding) and of punishment (emotional responses, escape and avoidance).
  7. Crisis and emergency procedures.

Tasks 5 and 6 are the additions. Punishment procedures were not on the previous task list as something an RBT implements, and the side effects of extinction and punishment were not tested at all. If your study materials treat punishment as a definition to memorize rather than a procedure with ethical guardrails and predictable side effects, they are out of date. Function first, always

Every behavior reduction question is downstream of function. The four commonly taught functions are access to attention, access to tangibles or activities, escape or avoidance, and automatic or sensory reinforcement. Some frameworks collapse the first two into “access to something in the environment,” which is why you will see both four-function and two-function language in the wild. The exam uses the common categories.

The practical skill is reading a scenario and identifying what maintains the behavior before you evaluate the answer options. When a client screams and the parent hands over the tablet, the function is access to a tangible, and the correct intervention will involve teaching a better way to request the tablet rather than, say, planned ignoring. The differential reinforcement family

FCT is named in the outline for the first time. Treat it as a specific, heavily researched form of DRA where the replacement is always a communication response. Full comparison in DRA vs DRI vs DRO vs DRL.

How it looks on the exam

A learner slams their workbook shut and puts their head down whenever multi-step math problems are presented. The behavior reliably ends the work demand. Which intervention most directly addresses the function?

A. Deliver praise every two minutes regardless of behavior B. Teach and reinforce a break request, and continue presenting the demand C. Remove math from the schedule for two weeks D. Implement planned ignoring

The answer is B. The function is escape, so the replacement must produce escape through an appropriate response. Option A is noncontingent attention, which addresses the wrong function. Option C removes the demand entirely and teaches nothing. Option D withholds attention, which was never maintaining the behavior in the first place, and it is the answer most people pick when they have memorized extinction without connecting it to function.

Domain E: Documentation and Reporting (10 questions, 13%)

Four tasks, ten questions. On paper this looks like the easiest domain. In practice it is the one where candidates get overconfident and lose four points to wording.

What the four tasks cover:

  1. Communicating concerns and suggestions from the intervention team, including caregivers, teachers, and other providers, to your supervisor in a timely manner.
  2. Seeking and prioritizing clinical direction from your supervisor in a timely manner, which covers training needs, data irregularities, and following the chain of command.
  3. Reporting and documenting variables that might affect client progress in a timely manner, such as illness, medication changes, and schedule changes.
  4. Communicating objectively what happened during the session, in line with legal, regulatory, and workplace requirements.

The through-line is objectivity and timeliness. Every question in this domain is testing whether you can separate what you observed from what you concluded, and whether you know that information travels to your supervisor rather than around them.

The objective language rule

If a note contains a state of mind, a diagnosis, an opinion, or a cause you did not observe, it is not objective. Compare:

  • Not objective: “Client was frustrated by the demand and refused to work.”
  • Objective: “Client pushed the worksheet away and said ‘no’ three times following the instruction to begin.”

The second version can be read by a parent, a funder, an auditor, or a new technician, and every one of them will picture the same session. That is the standard. How it looks on the exam

Documentation scenarios usually give you four notes and ask which belongs in the record, or they describe a situation and ask what you do first. When the options include telling the parent, telling a coworker, telling the supervisor, and doing nothing, the answer is nearly always the supervisor. The chain of command is not a formality on this exam, it is the tested content.

Domain F: Ethics (11 questions, 15%)

The renamed domain, and the one that grew the most. Ten tasks for eleven questions means the coverage is broad and shallow, so you need familiarity across all of it rather than depth in one area.

What the ten tasks cover:

  1. Identifying and applying the core principles behind the BACB’s ethics code for RBT certificants, including benefiting others, treating people with compassion, dignity, and respect, and behaving with integrity.
  2. Providing services only after demonstrating competence.
  3. Providing services only under ongoing supervision from a qualified supervisor.
  4. Identifying effective supervision practices, including training that uses instruction, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback, along with direct observation of your service delivery.
  5. Complying with requirements for collecting, using, storing, protecting, and disclosing confidential information.
  6. Complying with requirements for public statements about professional activities, including social media and misrepresentation of credentials, of behavior analysis, or of outcomes.
  7. Identifying types of multiple relationships, the risks they carry, and how to mitigate risk when they are unavoidable.
  8. Following the BACB’s guidelines on giving and receiving gifts.
  9. Applying interpersonal and professional skills such as accepting feedback, listening actively, seeking input, and collaborating.
  10. Engaging in ongoing cultural humility and responsiveness, including identifying personal biases, in service delivery and professional relationships.

Task 10 is brand new and worth specific attention, partly because it is new and partly because almost no legacy study material addresses it. Cultural humility on this exam is not a values statement, it is a set of behaviors: recognizing that your assumptions about routines, food, discipline, eye contact, and family roles are cultural rather than universal, asking rather than assuming, and adapting programming in collaboration with the family and your supervisor. Task 4 is also easy to overlook. It asks you to recognize effective supervision, which means behavior skills training shows up here as content, not just as something that happens to you. And tasks 2 and 3 are the scope-of-practice backbone: if a scenario has you working without supervision, or performing a skill you were never trained on, that is the wrong answer no matter how helpful it sounds.

The trap in ethics questions

Ethics items rarely offer an obviously unethical option. They offer four professional-sounding actions and ask which one comes first. When you are stuck, run this order:

  1. Is anyone unsafe? Safety first, always.
  2. Does the option require you to act outside your scope or without supervision as a registered behavior technician? Eliminate it.
  3. Does the option protect confidentiality? If not, eliminate it.
  4. Of what remains, which involves your supervisor soonest?

A study plan that matches the exam

Most study plans move front to back through a textbook. The exam is not weighted front to back. Here is a four-week structure that allocates time the way points are allocated.

A few principles that matter more than the schedule itself:

Test yourself before you feel ready. Retrieval practice beats rereading by a wide margin, and it is the only way to find out which concepts you recognize versus which ones you can actually produce. Take a full-length diagnostic in week one, not week four.

Review the questions you got right for the wrong reason. If you guessed between two options and happened to pick correctly, that item is a miss. Mark it.

Drill the pairs, not the terms. Nobody fails this exam because they cannot define duration. People fail because under time pressure they cannot separate duration from latency, DRO from DRA, or MO from SD. I keep a running list of these in the 12 ABA term pairs everyone confuses.

Practice at exam pace at least twice. Untimed practice builds knowledge. Timed practice builds the thing you need at 11:40 on a Tuesday morning with 20 questions left and 18 minutes on the clock.

How the 2026 exam asks questions

The 3rd Edition exam leans toward application. You will see fewer items that ask “what is the definition of X” and more that describe a session and ask what you should do, what procedure is being used, or what to do next.

Four things help:

Read the last sentence first. The stem often contains three sentences of setup and one sentence that tells you what is being asked. Knowing the question before you read the scenario keeps you from building the wrong mental model.

Identify the function or the procedure before you look at the options. Answer the question in your head, then find the option that matches. Reading the options first invites you to rationalize whichever one sounds most familiar.

Watch for “best,” “first,” “most appropriate,” and “next.” When those words appear, more than one option is defensible and you are being asked to rank them. Usually the differentiator is safety, scope, or function.

Eliminate on scope. Any option that has you designing a program, changing a plan, interpreting results for a family, or working without supervision is almost always wrong, in any domain. This one heuristic saves points across the entire exam.

Mistakes that cost people the pass

In no particular order, the patterns I see most:

  • Studying with 2nd Edition material and never encountering the new content on calculations, trends, punishment, extinction side effects, or cultural humility.
  • Memorizing definitions without practicing them in scenario form.
  • Treating Ethics as common sense and losing five questions to it.
  • Spending equal time on all six domains despite the 17/11/25/19/13/15 split.
  • Taking practice tests only at the end, so weak areas surface too late to fix.
  • Confusing negative reinforcement with punishment, over and over, in every domain it touches.
  • Running out of time because the first 20 questions took 30 minutes.
  • Assuming a hard question means failure. Ten of them are not even scored.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the RBT exam?

There are 85 multiple-choice questions. Seventy-five are scored and ten are unscored pilot items that the BACB uses to evaluate future questions. You have 90 minutes.

What score do you need to pass the RBT exam?

The BACB reports results as a scaled score, and 200 is the passing standard. Because the scaling accounts for differences in difficulty between exam forms, there is no fixed number of correct answers that guarantees a pass. Consistently scoring 80% or better on quality full-length practice exams is a reasonable readiness benchmark.

Is the RBT exam based on the 2nd or 3rd Edition task list?

Since January 1, 2026, all RBT exam content comes from the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.), which has 43 tasks across six domains. The 2nd Edition Task List is no longer the basis for the exam.

Which domain has the most questions?

Behavior Acquisition, with 19 of the 75 scored questions, or 25% of the exam. Behavior Reduction is second with 14 questions.

How long should I study for the RBT exam?

Most candidates who pass on the first attempt put in somewhere between 20 and 40 hours of focused study after their 40-hour training, spread across three to six weeks. The number matters less than the structure. Weighted study plus repeated timed practice beats a larger number of unfocused hours.

How many times can you take the RBT exam?

Per the BACB’s RBT Handbook, you may take the exam up to eight times within your 12-month authorization period, with a minimum seven-day wait between attempts. Always confirm the current policy in the latest handbook, since requirements are updated periodically.

Do I need to memorize all 43 tasks?

No. You need to be able to perform or recognize what each task describes. The outline is a map of the content, not a list of items to recite. Nobody will ask you to name task C.7.

Is the RBT exam open book?

No. It is a proctored, closed-book, computer-based exam taken at a Pearson VUE testing center.

What is the hardest part of the RBT exam?

Candidates most often report Behavior Acquisition and Data Collection as the hardest, for different reasons. Acquisition is the largest domain with the most procedures to keep separate. Data Collection now includes calculation and graph interpretation that older study material never covered.

Does the 40-hour training prepare you for the exam?

Partly. The 40-hour training is designed to teach you to do the job and to satisfy an eligibility requirement. It is not built as exam preparation, which is why many candidates who complete it still need dedicated practice with exam-style questions. Putting it together

The RBT exam is passable, and the people who pass it are rarely the ones who studied the longest. They are the ones who studied the right proportions, practiced in the format the exam actually uses, and knew which version of the content they were preparing for.

So, in order of what to do next:

  1. Confirm your materials are aligned to the 3rd Edition outline. If they still say Measurement and Skill Acquisition, they are not.
  2. Take a full-length diagnostic now, before you feel ready, and use the results to allocate your weeks.
  3. Weight your study time to the 17/11/25/19/13/15 split rather than studying everything evenly.
  4. Drill the confusable pairs until identification is automatic.
  5. Do two timed, full-length practice exams in the final week and review every miss, including the lucky guesses.
